Overnighter

Privacy

Overnighter is an iPhone app (with an Apple Watch app and this website) for planning trips, tracking gear and recording hikes and paddles. I build it on my own. This page says what it keeps, where that goes, and how to delete it.

The short version

  • No ads, no tracking across other apps or sites, and I never sell data.
  • Your trips, gear, packs and activities live on your iPhone and in your own iCloud account.
  • Nothing is public unless you publish it or share it to Community yourself.

On your iPhone and in iCloud

Trips, gear, packs, food, campsites and activities are stored on your device and sync through your private iCloud account (Apple CloudKit). I can't see that data. Downloaded maps, land-use layers and campsite packs stay on the device until you delete them.

Location

Location shows where you are on the map, finds nearby trails and campsites, and records the route while you track an activity. "Always" access is only needed if you want a recording to keep going with the screen locked. When you tap a spot to check land use, that point is sent to the public government map service that answers the question.

Apple Health

Health access is only requested for features you turn on: importing workouts, saving tracked activities as workouts, and using recent workouts to improve time estimates. Health data is read on your device and is never uploaded to my servers.

The web app

If you pair a browser with the app, the planning data you choose to sync (trips, packs, gear, routes and their photos) is stored on the Overnighter server so you can edit it on the web. It's tied to a random ID, not your name or email. Disconnecting the browser (Devices in the web app) stops it.

This site uses Vercel Web Analytics to count page views. It doesn't use cookies and doesn't identify you.

What you publish

When you publish a trip, pack or activity, it becomes a public page at overnighter.ca that anyone with the link can see and search engines can index, including its route and campsite locations. You can take it down from the app at any time.

Community

Places, photos and reviews you share to Community, along with your username, display name and bio, are stored in the app's public iCloud database and can be seen by anyone who uses Overnighter or this site. I review every place and photo before it appears. Reports you send come to me. You can withdraw what you shared from the app.

Other services

  • Maps: Mapbox and Apple Maps.
  • Weather and elevation: Apple WeatherKit and Open-Meteo.
  • Food search and barcodes: Open Food Facts and USDA FoodData Central, only when you use them.
  • Strava and Garmin: only if you connect them, and only to move your own activities.
  • Tips: handled by Apple. I never see payment details.

Deleting your data

Settings → Erase All App Data deletes everything in the app, and the deletion syncs through iCloud. To delete what's on the web server or in Community, email me and I'll remove it.

Kids

Overnighter isn't aimed at children under 13 and doesn't knowingly collect their data.
